What is Digital Marketing?

Digital Marketing encompasses so much these days since so much of advertising and marketing has moved to the internet and online.

Gone are the days when marketing was all about telephone calls, ad space and billboard banners on busy streets and highways.

In fact, magazines and newspapers are dying mediums themselves as more consumers are moving online for their everyday needs and information.

The growth of digital marketing is massive and ever growing, but it is still not defined clearly. This post is an attempt to define Digital Marketing in brief and introduce you to some of the key areas of digital marketing being practiced today.

Definition of Digital Marketing.

Wikipedia defines Digital Marketing as:

“Digital marketing is marketing that makes use of electronic devices such as computers, tablets, smartphones, cellphones, digital billboards, and game consoles to engage with consumers and other business partners. Internet Marketing is a major component of digital marketing. Digital marketing is a marketing process which leads to the development of any organization or brand by using a variety of digital channels such as email, social networks etc.”

At Brandmovers India, we have a slight modified version of the definition:

“Digital Marketing is marketing to the right people, at the right time and place, making use of smart digital channels and mediums. The primary objective and deliverables being consumer engagement and satisfaction.”

For us, it’s simply not just publishing and distributing content about your products and services. It’s about the people. It’s about engagement. It’s about how smart businesses today operate in the online environment. It’s about how smart marketing meets internet technology and other forms of new media.

Why Digital Marketing is important.

One of the most important aspects of digital marketing is the ability to create quantifiable results. What this means, simply, is that the action of marketing should have a measurable reaction of traffic.

Digital media is an ever-growing source of entertainment, news, shopping and social interaction, and consumers are now exposed not just to what your company says about your brand, but what the media, friends, relatives and peers are saying as well.
